Here is the part most clinics skip: not every device marketed as a laser is one. Some use radiofrequency, some use heat delivered mechanically, and some use tiny needles. They all belong to the energy-based family, and each does something a little different. Calling them all lasers would be inaccurate, and getting the technology right is key to getting the treatment your skin actually needs.

Lasers

  • Aerolase NeoElite: A 1064nm laser with a short pulse, non-ablative, well-suited to darker and Hispanic or Latina skin because it carries a lower risk of burns and pigment change. It treats sunspots, redness, small vessels, and acne, and builds collagen, with minimal recovery.
  • Sentient Symphony: A long-pulsed 1064nm laser, used for laser hair removal that is safe on deeper skin tones, for visible vessels and vascular concerns, and for gentle laser facials.
  • Vader: A diode laser for hair removal, the standard technology for reducing unwanted hair across a range of skin tones.

Radiofrequency

  • TempSure Envi: Not a laser. A radiofrequency device that heats the deeper skin to tighten it and soften wrinkles over a series, with no real recovery.
  • Venus Viva: Not a laser. A fractional radiofrequency device whose fine pins resurface texture, acne scars, and sun damage. Because it uses radiofrequency rather than light, it does not target pigment, which makes it a safer option for darker skin when the settings are chosen carefully.

Ultrasound

  • Ultherapy: Not a laser. Micro-focused ultrasound that reaches the deep support layers of the skin to lift and tighten the brow, chin, and neck by stimulating collagen.

Thermo-mechanical

  • Tixel: Not a laser. A heated titanium tip touches the skin to resurface, at an adjustable depth from a light refresh to deeper work.

Microneedling and microchanneling

  • Collagen PIN: Not a laser. Microneedling that creates microscopic channels to stimulate collagen for texture and scarring.
  • Mesogold: Not a laser. A gold-tipped microchanneling device that creates fine channels to deliver targeted serums and improve glow, texture, and tone.

Body contouring

  • TruSculpt iD: Not a laser. A monopolar radiofrequency device that heats and reduces stubborn fat in areas like the abdomen and flanks.
  • TruSculpt flex: Not a laser. An electrical muscle stimulation device that contracts targeted muscle groups to tone and strengthen. It does not reduce fat.
  • Sentient Sculpt: Not a laser and not radiofrequency. A microwave-energy device, FDA-cleared for cellulite, that also reduces fat and tightens skin.

What To Expect

It starts with a consultation, where the dermatologist examines your skin and selects the device and settings that best suit it, or tells you if a laser is not the right route. Cooling and numbing keep treatment comfortable.

Recovery depends entirely on the device. The lasers, radiofrequency tightening, ultrasound, and microchanneling here are chosen for little to no recovery, a few hours of redness at most. Fractional resurfacing asks for more: Tixel and the Venus Viva can mean a day or two of pink skin, and up to several days of flaking or a pattern of tiny dots at deeper settings. Most concerns need a series spaced weeks apart, results build gradually, and they vary from person to person.

Several are, several are not, and we would rather be straight about it. The lasers are the Aerolase, the Symphony, and the Vader. The rest use radiofrequency (TempSure Envi and Venus Viva), ultrasound (Ultherapy), heat delivered mechanically (Tixel), or fine needles (Collagen PIN and Mesogold). They are all energy- or device-based skin treatments, and naming each one accurately is how you end up with the right one.

How do I know which treatment I need?

Is there much recovery?
